Preparation for East Java Provincial Sports Week (Porprov):Surabaya Lion Dance Federation Holds Selection at Cheng Hoo Mosque

A total of 8 Lion Dance training centers from across Surabaya participated in the selection event held by the Surabaya Lion Dance Federation (FOBI Surabaya) at the courtyard of Cheng Hoo Mosque, Surabaya, on Saturday, February 22, 2025.

Anies Rungkat, Chairman of FOBI Surabaya, stated that the selection process was conducted as part of the preparations for the upcoming East Java Provincial Sports Week (Porprov) 2025, scheduled to be held in Malang Raya in June-July.

“This selection process is not only for Porprov but also serves as an early preparation for the 2028 National Sports Week (PON),” he said.

Anies further explained that Cheng Hoo Mosque was chosen as the venue to help bring Lion Dance closer to the public.

“Moreover, 70% of Lion Dance athletes come from non-Chinese ethnic backgrounds,” he added.

Evaluation Criteria

Adi Kurniawan, Vice Chairman of the Jury, alongside Tjokro Pontjoharyo, Chairman of the Selection Jury, stated that 10 assessment criteria would determine whether participants would qualify.

Among these criteria are:
✅ Level of difficulty
✅ Lion Dance form
✅ Expression
✅ Synchronization
✅ Harmony
✅ Performance results
✅ Decoration and presentation

The selection process was also attended by several notable figures, including:

🔹 Rasmono Sudarjo (Secretary of PMTS)
🔹 Oei Tjing Yen (Public Relations of YHMCHI)
🔹 Ustadz Hasan Basri (Head of YHMCHI Committee)
🔹 Tamam Malaka

This selection marks an important milestone in preparing the best Lion Dance athletes from Surabaya to compete at the provincial and national levels.
