SANYA – The Indonesian national delegation, represented by the Yogyakarta Dragon Dance Team and the Central Java Northern Lion (Pekingsai) Team, achieved outstanding success at the 2026 “Sanya Cup” International Dragon and Lion Dance Elite Championship. The prestigious event was held in Sanya, Hainan Province, China, on January 18, 2026.

In this high-level competition, the Indonesian teams successfully secured two bronze medals in the Dragon Dance and Northern Lion (Pekingsai) categories. For these achievements, each team was awarded a cash prize of 11,000 Yuan Renminbi.

The 2026 “Sanya Cup,” held from January 17 to 19 in Sanya City, stands as a major highlight in this year’s international dragon and lion dance calendar. The tournament featured 24 elite teams and approximately 300 athletes from various countries and regions, including China, Malaysia, Italy, Vietnam, South Korea, and Indonesia.

The categories contested included Dragon Dance performances, Traditional and High-Pole Southern Lion Dance, and Northern Lion (Pekingsai) routines, showcasing a blend of traditional cultural heritage and world-class athletic skill.

The Chairman of the Indonesia Dragon and Lion Dance Federation (PB FOBI), Mr. Edy Kusuma (Qiu Changren), stated that the selection of the teams to represent Indonesia was based on their stellar performance and track record at the 2025 FOBI National Championship (KEJURNAS) held in Bali.

“This achievement is a testament to the discipline and hard work of our athletes in bringing Indonesia’s name to the international level. We hope this success serves as an inspiration for the advancement of Dragon and Lion Dance sports across the country,” said Mr. Edy Kusuma.

He further expressed his gratitude: “I would like to thank all the athletes, coaches, and officials for their dedication, as well as the FOBI Provincial Chapters (Pengprov) for their unwavering support. May this championship provide valuable insights to further develop and enhance the quality of our athletes nationwide.”

As a bridge between athletic competition and cultural exchange, the participation of the Indonesian delegation in the “Sanya Cup” strengthens Indonesia’s presence in the global dragon and lion dance community and fosters international cooperation.
